Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir

Genre: Science Fiction | Pages: 496 | ⭐ Overall: ★★★★★ (4.9/5)

“I loved how their bond grew despite their differences, and how much humor and heart their conversations carried.”

Ryland Grace wakes up millions of miles from Earth with no memory, two dead crewmates, and one impossible mission: save humanity from extinction. As his memories slowly return, he must unravel a scientific mystery alone aboard a tiny ship—or so he thinks. Project Hail Mary is a thrilling, heart-filled space adventure about survival, discovery, and an unexpected friendship that just might save the universe.

Project Hail Mary completely surprised me — and I mean that in the best way possible. I don’t usually read science fiction, but this one pulled me right in once the story found its rhythm. At first, it’s a slow burn (lots of science talk and space jargon), but once things start clicking, you realize how clever and emotional this story really is.

The main character, Ryland Grace, wakes up alone on a spaceship with no memory of who he is or why he’s there. Soon, he meets Rocky — an alien that looks like a spider, but somehow ends up being one of the most lovable, loyal, and hilarious characters I’ve ever read. Their friendship becomes the heart of the story. I loved how their bond grew despite their differences, and how much humor and heart their conversations carried.

The writing feels fun, fast, and surprisingly emotional. I laughed more than I expected, felt anxious near the end, and even got a little teary when Ryland made his final choice — turning his ship away from Earth to save Rocky, knowing he’d never make it home. It’s a rare story that mixes laughter, science, and heartbreak all in one, and this one nailed it.

🌌 Best read on: a quiet night when you can let your imagination drift among the stars
📍 For readers who love: Interstellar, stories of unlikely friendships, and brave choices that change everything

Amazon Book Description

Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission—and if he fails, humanity and the earth itself will perish.

Except that right now, he doesn’t know that. He can’t even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it.

All he knows is that he’s been asleep for a very, very long time. And he’s just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

His crewmates dead, his memories fuzzily returning, Ryland realizes that an impossible task now confronts him. Hurtling through space on this tiny ship, it’s up to him to puzzle out an impossible scientific mystery—and conquer an extinction-level threat to our species.

And with the clock ticking down and the nearest human being light-years away, he’s got to do it all alone.

Or does he?

An irresistible interstellar adventure as only Andy Weir could deliver, Project Hail Mary is a tale of discovery, speculation, and survival to rival The Martian—while taking us to places it never dreamed of going.
